Short answer
The answer, before the argument.
An ingredient list can become a chorus in which every name is asked to sing the loudest. The result may look impressive on a product page and still reveal very little about how the formula was designed.
A useful formula has hierarchy. One material may carry the principal sensory task. Another may support appearance. Others protect the formula itself, stabilize a delicate oil, soften the scent or make the experience repeatable from batch to batch. Support is not inferiority. It is structure.
Hero, support and protection
The hero is the ingredient or system responsible for the clearest public idea. Supporting materials broaden or reinforce that work. Protective ingredients preserve the integrity of the blend so the product arriving at the end of its shelf life still resembles the product that left the manufacturer.
This is why an antioxidant included to protect oils from oxidation should not automatically become a promise about what the product will do to a person. The ingredient may be doing essential work inside the bottle. That work is worthy without being turned into a transformation claim.
The label does not show the score
An INCI list tells you what is present. It does not show which ingredient is the lead, which is supporting, how each was processed, or whether the final product performed consistently.
That explanation belongs in the brand’s formulation record and, when relevant, in evidence attached to a public claim.
Fewer names can reveal more judgment
A shorter list is not automatically better. A longer list is not automatically more advanced. The question is whether every line has a role that another line is not already performing well enough.
Authorship is not the absence of complexity. It is complexity with an editor.
Support is not inferiority. It is structure.
